thanks for your answer. It gives me a little more insight on how these tools work, I think. Assuming I'm right with what I'm thinking right now, noted I'm often not, would the ultimate way forward not be a channel much like a host kernel enabled communication interface with the guest?
I'm saying this without regard to any Microsoft product that would need to be supported as well; obviously challenges are greater there, and quite frankly I think they just lose.
Either way, what are your thoughts on letting the host (directed by “management” maybe?) monitor the guest(s) for both system & service performance & availability? Possibly even configuration management could be applied through the host? One could centralize a lot more, reduce footprints (in/on the guest) and possibly account for much more resources much more efficiently given accounting features in the manager.
The longer I'm thinking about this, the more I think this isn't a topic to discuss in a blog post. Are you going to be in Toronto by any chance?
This is where a little history is useful!
Back in "the olden days" there were two types of bridging – source route bridging, used on token ring, and transparent bridging, used on ethernet.
That name is important – transparaent bridging. That means the bridge is invisible to end systems.
The bridge evolved into what we call a switch. When it comes down to it, a switch is just a multi port bridge!
So, the switch is transparent to the end system. That means we don't (normally!) talk directly to the switch.
The switch is operating at Layer two.
Arp is used to find the layer two address of a device with an IP address. We need to get the traffic to the router, for the router to forward it. That means at layer two we need to use the layer two address of the router, so that it can be passed through the switch to the router.
Switch ports often do have a MAC address, but if we aimed the frame at the switch port, the switch would not know what to do with it.

Actually, Linden Lab can help saving Lauks Nest. There is a program, obviously hidden -impossible to find information about it on their website – for non commercial cultural places on SL. Lauks Nest is a non commercial place, we have been using it to show art, without selling it during events. Many great artists exhibited their work there, and many others are awaiting to exhibit their art. It is also used as a event and meeting place for the soelse non commercial group, working as inter-cultural communication interface. There is a shop belonging to Laukosargas Svarig on Lauks Nest, but it is not rented, just a memory of the past and a possibility for many visitor to buy Laukosargas trees or bees and birds…I never got a cent of it or any business on Lauks, and received many offers to rent it for meetings, weddings or conferences, and I answered always the same way: “You are welcome to meet here, organize your event or conference. You will never have to pay a Linden for it”…I will apply for this program and need support for that. this way lauks nest will remain and perdure and develop as a art place
