Hi to everyone at Metrac Blog…hello Andrea how are you. I served on the Board from 2002-2004 can you guess who?

Anyways, regarding the post I thought the acting to be so fake anyway, and the fact that it takes less than a minute for the woman to lose herself (thunder) and then find herself again not only in the embrace of her lover, but also the joy of the “beautiful” gift is quite pathetic.

But hey, if they never showed commercials like this we would never know how much we are unlike these characters.

Drew, I don't know if the diamond companies will change their tactics, because they don't advertise for men…the old story is that “Diamonds are a girl's best friend”. In my opinion, women have money and can buy their own diamonds right? So I don't think they are advertising to empowered women, just the ones who want some guy to come along and shower her with gifts (imo).

Ok, I've said a lot. Hope to read more good stuff from Metrac's blog team.

I understand your exasperation. I was determined to see this movie since I had been reading about (and writing vulgar letters to diamond companies) since my university years. I watched a clip of the Oprah show discussing the movie and I was so outraged by the stupid, cursory, and insulting coverage of the direct and devastating role that these companies take in the civil wars.Oprah pissed me off (as she always does) and those PlasticWood freaks in their thousand dollar outfits and vacant, vapid intellect sent me over the edge. I'll be damned if I add my hard earned $9.99 to their bottom-less pockets. Kimberly process, my black ass. The only process I'd like to see is the removal of the white man's grubby paws from our affairs and his direct benefit of our misery in every corner of the universe.

  5. Very true. I must admit that my vision of an analog future seems quixotic… what am I typing on now but a laptop computer? I think that the first step is being mindful of our consumption, and the true costs (which remain hidden from view most of the time).

And certainly I think that recycling, or moving away from the “culture of obsolescence” that characterizes our electronic device habit – repair/maintaining as opposed to chucking – would be a big help.

Also, many companies (Sony for one) have made statements that they do not source their coltan from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (much in the same way that the big diamond companies have stated that they don't deal in “conflict diamonds”). But many critics have pointed out that it's almost impossible to trace the origins of tantalum that ends up in electronic devices. And, like “blood diamonds,” demand for the resource in general is what creates the general market, without which the exploitative mining wouldn't be taking place.

    Thanks for your comment!
