Of the original 142 million acres of Tallgrass Prairie in North
America, less than 4% remains. The last significant expanse of
Tallgrass is concentrated in the Flint Hills of Kansas and the Osage Hills of
northeastern Oklahoma. This pristine ranch land is recognized by ranchers, environmentalists, sportsmen, educators, artists, travel-tourism directors,
historians, and grass roots citizen groups as an area that should be preserved for
future generations. The Flint Hills are not only a Kansas treasure; they are
a national treasure. Elk River's one hundred- 396' turbines alters the very
character of the landscape and cultural heritage that our smallcommunities are
trying to preserve in the Flint Hills of Kansas.
Located in the Flint Hills Tallgrass Prairie of Kansas, the Elk River
Industrial Wind Plant covers 8,000 acres, 12.5 square miles of this endangered prairie
ecosystem. The 100 tower Elk River wind plant demonstrates just how
land intensive and ecologically disruptive wind developments are to the
prairie ecosystem. The Elk River Project in Butler County required over
21 miles of new, improved roads across irreplaceable Tallgrass Prairie.
To anchor each turbine, the prairie was also quarried to make room
for tons of concrete per turbine.
The ecological consequences of wind energy in the Flint Hills are
considerable. Not only has the intricate prairie grass system been
disturbed and fragmented, but ground level habitat has been disrupted
for the greater prairie chicken, in particular. The Nature Conservancy and
Wildlife Management Institute have information on the decline of the prairie
chicken population.
It would take roughly 4,500 turbines just to match the generating
capacity of Jeffery Energy Center, a very land intensive effort to
produce energy. However, the efficiency rating for wind developments in
Kansas is approximately 30-35% because when the wind doesn't blow, no
energy is produced. See Westar's annual report. All these land
intensive turbines will still not replace any conventionally energy
producing plant and will cause serious ecological damage when placed in
our native places in Kansas.
